IAGREE with Mrs H Hamer's remarks (Letters, July 24) regarding street pride.

If she was to walk down the same streets she describes, she will probably see many satellite dishes, cars at the doors and, of course, mobile phones glued to residents' ears. So, unfortunately, finding £2 for a sweeping brush is out of the question. Also, a brush doesn't come with a remote control.

I am laughed at and told I am wasting my time when trying to keep our area of our street clean and tidy.

You see, I, too, am determined not to be brought down to the gutter level. After spending my life from having nothing and gravitating upwards, I am now proud of what I have attained.

What a marvellous difference it would make if everyone would just step outside their own front doors and pick up the rubbish which has landed there.

I guess the response from most people would be: "It's not my job." But such people have no ambition or pride.

H HARGREAVES (Mr), Coniston Avenue, Accrington.
