LANCASHIRE were looking to Yorkshire for inspiration at Colwyn Bay today.
They were almost batted out of their Championship game against Glamorgan after John Crawley lost an important toss and Matthew Maynard hit his first century in his native North Wales.
But even with Glamorgan reaching 386 -7, vice captain Warren Hegg wasn't prepared to write off Lancashire's victory chances.
"You only have to look at what Yorkshire did against us last week," he said.
"We made 370-odd in our first innings, but they replied with 500 plus and won the match. Now we have to do the same."
Lancashire could have been in a better position because Maynard was bowled by Joe Scuderi's first ball when he had scored 71.
But umpire George Sharp signalled a no-ball and Maynard went on to 145, his third century against Lancashire, and shared a fourth wicket stand of 166 with Adrian Dale to take Glamorgan to 333-3.
Lancashire fought back well late on an exhausting day, with Peter Martin finally gaining a reward for his perseverance as Maynard edged him to Hegg.
Glen Chapple, who had earlier had Glamorgan's young opener Ian Thomas dropped twice in the slips, then claimed his second wicket when Keith Newell chopped on.
And Gary Keedy had Mark Wallace caught at short leg and bowled another left-hander, Darren Thomas, in the space of three balls.
Keedy had earlier had Glamorgan's Australian opener Jimmy Maher stumped by Hegg, who also took a brilliant low catch off Andy Flintoff to dismiss Mike Powell.
But with the pitch already offering some spin, Lancashire were still facing a tough battle to avoid their fourth consecutive Championship defeat -- and being sucked deeper into a relegation battle.
