Abba Kadabbara at The Globe, Blackpool Pleasure Beach
IF YOU take a chance on this Abba tribute show you'll have a laugh, but don't expect too much. Perhaps I'm getting old, but it was frankly rather loud.
The costumes were not great either. The boys had it right, with white and gold flares and shirts, platform boots and Benny and Bjorn hair. But the girls? Their tight-fitting and stretchy leggings and asymmetrical dresses -- later replaced with long striped ponchos -- just didn't have any impact.
But by the end of the night things had improved. Abba Kadabbara -- enthusiastic and clearly enjoying themselves -- finished the evening in platform boots and eye-catching gold and silver costumes. And the audience had started to see the funny side of the performers' strange accents and silly banter.
Abba Kadabbara were not so much polished as dusted off and tidy performers. And if you like Abba's music you will undoubtedly enjoy the show.
But, although we all swayed, clapped and sang along on cue, by the end of the night there were some people in the audience who obviously couldn't wait to get out.
The lighting was impressive, but feedback spoiled the sound in places, and I couldn't help wishing the backdrop of rocks from Eclipse had somehow been hidden away. A happy evening's entertainment, but instantly forgettable.
Abba Kadabbara runs every Thursday until October 25.
