A SCHOOLBOY who alerted rescuers by using his mobile phone when he fell down a 65ft ravine today relived his ordeal.
Daniel Emmett, 12, of Avenue Parade, Accrington, said he was in so much pain he thought he had broken his ribs after plunging from the top of the town's Coppice on to hidden bricks in thick woodland below.
Daniel, a pupil at Hollins County High School in Hollins Lane, Accrington, was today due to go on a week's holiday to the Lakes with his dad, Phil Emmett and brother, Christopher, 13, after being discharged from Blackburn Infirmary.
The youngster, who escaped with minor cuts and bruises, has only ever had one previous accident, when he crashed his bike into a wall seven years ago.
He alerted emergency services by using the phone he had bought with his birthday money in February.
The youngster spent more than an hour at the bottom of the ravine until mountain rescue teams pulled him to safety on a sledge.
Today he described the events leading up to and after Wednesday night's fall and said: "I was just climbing and it was a bit wet and I fell down the hill. I fell too fast to be able to stop myself and I landed on the bricks at the bottom.
"We were all going to play on the rope swing, but decided not to because it didn't look too safe.
"When I fell, two of my friends ran down to me and the others went to get help. They searched my pockets for my phone and I told them to call the ambulance. I was in too much pain to ring myself.
"I wasn't frightened or anything I just hurt all over. The left side of my back really hurt and I thought I'd broken one of my ribs. I think I'm really lucky I only got cuts and bruises and I doubt I'll be going back there again.
"It was lucky I had my mobile with me because all my friends had left theirs at home. I'd wanted one for a long time, so I'm glad my mum let me have one. I'll be carrying it with me all the time now.
"I bet my teachers won't believe me when I tell them what happened. I'll have to take the newspaper in to prove it."
Mum Janice Pattinson, added: "I'm just relieved it's all over and Daniel is all right."
