TEENAGER Jon Coventry will be heading out to Philadelphia this week to take part in the Dragon Boat Racing World Championships -- thanks to a helping hand from Shaun Woodward.
After 18 months of hard training, the 15-year-old from Eccleston earned selection for the Great Britain under 18s squad.
But he needed £300 sponsorship to help him fulfil his dream -- which is when he decided to write to Mr Woodward to ask for his help.
With only hours to got before a final decision had to be made, the St Helens South MP approached a number of organisations and the Foundation for Sports and The Arts came to Jon's aid.
Jon said: "I am extremely thankful to Mr Woodward for helping me. I had sent out many letters asking for support but I had heard nothing. I have worked really hard this year but until I got this news I thought that was all a waste. Mr Woodward has given me the chance to take part in the World Championships and I can't wait to bring back a gold medal".
Shaun Woodward said: "Jon is a very talented young man. To be selected to represent your country is a real honour and we in St Helens must ensure all our young talent is recognised and supported. I wish Jon and the rest of the team very well and look forward to seeing their collection of medals on their return".
