FIREFIGHTERS enjoyed fun in the sun when they welcomed 1,000 visitors to their open day.
The annual event at Leigh fire station, in St Helens Road, included dramatic safety displays such as a chip pan fire, cutting people from a staged road traffic accident, and light-hearted fun, thanks to Welephant, games, stalls and the chance for youngsters to climb on board a fire engine.
Organiser John Shepherd, who is the sports and welfare representative at Leigh fire station, said: "We couldn't have asked for better weather.
"We all had a brilliant day, but the lads were exhausted by the end of it.
"The chip pan fire display seemed to get the message through, but nobody fancied any chips afterwards because of the hot weather," Mr Shepherd said.
The event, which received plenty of support from businesses such as Widdows Mason and Toffs, raised more than £2,000, which will be donated to the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and local charities.
