MRS L Nicholson (Letters, August 1) criticises the Council spending money on 'daft' traffic calming in Darwen. Over the last few weeks, we have had traffic calming measures introduced in the Harwood Street/Hindle Street area of Darwen. This has been welcomed by local residents, who have been pressing for traffic calming for years.
The only complaints I have received have been from people from outside the area, mainly complaining that they are having to travel more slowly -- which is precisely why residents wanted traffic calming in the first place.
I was also interested that Mrs Nicholson believes that the Council spends no money on improving roads in Darwen. I noticed that she lives in Cloister Drive, so it is very difficult for Mrs Nicholson to drive out of Darwen without travelling along a road repaired or resurfaced by the Council in the past year.
Councillor DAVE HOLLINGS (Sunnyhurst Ward), Sudell Road, Darwen.
