POLICE cordoned off a Whitefield street after a vicious attack on a local man.
The 23-year-old victim suffered a serious cut to his head which left the pavement near to the Red King pub covered in blood.
He was taken to Bury General Hospital for treatment but was later discharged after becoming abusive to staff.
The attack happened shortly after 1am on Saturday (Aug 4) in Moss Lane at its junction with Bury New Road.
The victim had just visited a chip shop where he had an argument with a young man and woman.
The man followed him out and attacked the 23-year-old, punching him repeatedly about the head.
Detective Sergeant Duncan Heywood of Bury Police said: "The attack scene was cordoned off by officers for forensic examination.
"It was at first believed his injuries were serious but the victim was later discharged from hospital after treatment as a result of his abusive and violent behaviour.
"We are still waiting to speak further with the victim about the assault and his attackers."
Police want anyone who saw the attack to contact Whitefield CID on 856 8248.
