Clarets manager Stan Ternent ran the rule over another trialist last night as d-day for all the players hoping to impress the Burnley boss looms today.
South African Gareth Orratt, a tall defender, played the full 90 minutes in the 6-1 rout of understrength non-League side Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground.
He made some crunching tackles but may not make the grade with Steve Davis, Ian Cox, Mitchell Thomas, Gordon Armstrong and maybe French trialist Arthur Gnohere fighting for what is usually two spots.
A Clarets XI do play at Ramsbottom United tonight so Orratt may get another chance (KO 7.30pm).
But for the trio who have featured in recent games -- winger Alan Moore, defender Gnohere and midfielder Paul Hughes -- they didn't feature last night but expect to know their fate by tonight.
"I will let them know today," confirmed Ternent.
While the Burnley boss has a number of choices in defence, his striking options looked even more healthy after young forward Anthony Shandran scored one goal and looked lively in the victory at the Crown Ground.
He and John Mullin ran the Reds side ragged in the second half and, although it may yet be too early for the 20-year-old, he will be aiming to press the likes of Gareth Taylor, Ian Moore and Andy Payton in the near future.
Lennie Johnrose and recent signing Mark McGregor were the other two players on the fringe of the first team who played through at Stanley in a bid to put themselves in the manager's mind for the big kick off on Sunday at Sheffield Wednesday.
Meanwhile Ternent has confirmed that the 6.15pm start for the opening game of the season is something that First Division sides will just have to accept.
"Well, it is different but the Premiership have been doing that for some time with the television companies," he said.
"We are in the First Division and have to come to terms with it.
"It is just a case for preparing properly for it.
"It is a part of football life now and we have to fall in with it.
"If we play 3pm on Saturday's or 7.45pm during the week that is pretty normal but now you have to get used to playing on Thursdays or on Sundays at 6.15. But it will be okay."
Former Clarets Mark Robertson has won his first call-up to the Australian team.
The midfielder, who now plays for Dundee, will get his full cap in the Oceana Cup competition later this month.
