OFTEN described as 'The Greatest Free Show on Earth' Blackpool Illuminations extends along over six miles of the promenade.
Blackpool was the first town in Britain to have electric street lighting. In 1879 six arc lamps on the 'prom' and one on each of the then two piers were erected and used as a massive arena for a carnival night.
Each year the illuminations reach new peaks of excellence. Today, the equipment is worth over two million pounds and over £900,000 a year is spent on the staging and production.
I prefer scaring myself to death by venturing on the Big One rather than looking at the lights but one thing I wouldn't miss is the switch on ceremony.
The illuminations will be lit up in style with chart topping band Steps switching on the lights. And with a special guest appearance by Spice Girl Emma Bunton, it will be the place to be.
Have a look at www.blackpool. com/sights/lights.html for more information on dates and times of when the fun will start.
