POLICE investigating theft and damage at the war memorial on the moors between Weir and Burnley are now probing a second mystery.
Despite numerous inquiries they have been unable to find out who owns the Deerplay Monument in Burnley Road.
A large amount of damage was caused on Wednesday, July 25, when someone moved 30 stone flags from the monument wall apparently intending to take them away in a vehicle.
One man was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident and is now on police bail pending further inquiries.
PC Phil Halton said: "We need to know who owns the monument so that we can find out exactly what damage has been done and ask if they wish us to take any further action.
"Anyone who has any information should contact the police as soon as possible."
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC on 01282 472146 or the friends of War Memorials conservation officer Maggie Goodall on 0207 2590403.
