THE victims of Bury's two unsolved murders, grandmother Shirley Leach and garage boss Tom Hewitt, are to be the subjects of a new TV crime show.

Their brutal deaths will be featured in Granada's forthcoming Case Unsolved programme, which will be broadcast later this month.

The programme will include new filmed reconstructions of the victims' last movements and fresh appeals by detectives in a bid to find the murderers.

The first episode will feature the murder of 66-year-old Shirley Leach, whose battered body was discovered in the toilets at Bury Interchange in January, 1994. Her murder sparked a massive manhunt, which is still continuing today. A Granada crew was in Bury on Tuesday night (Aug 7) filming a reconstruction of Mrs Leach's last moments.

The TV crew is expected to return to the town next week to film a second reconstruction, this time involving Bury's only other unsolved murder.

Tom Hewitt died on September 7, 1974, the day after he was viciously attacked at his car repair garage in Bright Street, Bury.

The father-of-three was discovered lying unconscious and bleeding from severe head wounds. He was taken to Bury General Hospital and later underwent an emergency operation at Salford Royal Infirmary, where he died the following day.

More than 30 officers were drafted in to Bury from around the country to join the manhunt.

Together with interviews with the relatives of the victims, Granada's Case Unsolved series hopes to jog the memories of residents in a bid to solve the murders.
