SAFETY improvements are to be installed on a busy main road leading into Padiham, the town's county councillor Marcus Johnstone has been told.

Residents living on the busy A671 Blackburn Road have expressed concern about the volume of Traffic passing their homes, particularly since the opening of he nearby Shuttleworth Mead business park.

Coun Johnstone said: "I have now received assurances that steps are being taken to ensure speeds are reduced on Blackburn Road while at the same time the amount of traffic is cut as much as possible."

He said a new speed camera would be installed on the road and was expected to be in operation by the end of this month.

Heavy lorries would also be banned from turning right out of Shuttleworth Mead in a measure to keep heavy traffic out of Padiham town centre.

"Traffic lights are currently being installed at the business park and 'no right turn' signs are expected to go up soon," Coun Johnstone added.

He has also persuaded Lancashire's highways chiefs to back his call for police to monitor traffic speeds and a request for any enforcement action deemed necessary has been made.

He said: "I hope these measures are successful. Keeping lumbering lorries out of Padiham town centre is an absolute priority as far as I am concerned.

"It is equally important that the people of Blackburn Road don't have to put up with traffic speeding past their homes.

"There have already been enough accidents on that stretch."
