COLLEGE bosses have made a second attempt to get planning permission for a new extension.

Members of Blackburn with Darwen's planning and highways committee last month rejected proposals by Blackburn College for a new, two-storey construction workshop, which would have been built on a makeshift car park at the junction of St Pauls Street and Montague Street.

Councillors had argued that constructing the building on that site would prevent future expansion of the soon-to-be-built Barbara Castle Way extension, which will run across land to Montague Street.

Although another route has been chosen for the extension, councillors were concerned that widening the road in the future would not be possible if the college built the construction workshops.

They also expressed concern about the reduction in town centre parking spaces.

At the time of the refusal, college bosses said they would return to their consultants, Nick Evans Architects, in London, before deciding what action to take.

At the time, a spokesman for the college said: "We are disappointed. I think the councillors have made a decision without getting their facts right.

"Which other piece of land are we supposed to use? I can't think of any.

"We will be going back to our consultants to see what is the next move they recommend for us."

The matter will be discussed at the next meeting of the council's planning and highways committee.
