A NEW book chronicling Saints' life at Knowsley Road hits the shops in September and the St Helens Star has five copies to give away.
Penned by Saints' supporter Andrew Quirke, Knowsley Road - Memories of St Helens RLFC is not a dry, boring history book but a list of lively and candid anecdotes from players, coaches and supporters spanning the decades.
A long list of Knowsley Road greats includes Tom Van Vollenhoven, Alex Murphy, Duggie Greenall, Eric Chisnall, Geoff Pimblett and John Mantle through to Bobbie Goulding, Chris Joynt and Keiron Cunningham.
Each have a tale to tell, with the pieces fitting together like a jigsaw.
There are also plenty of down to earth comments from the terraces - the joy, the drama, the false hope and bitter disappointment.
And the author has pulled off a major coup by getting his first Saints hero - Mal Meninga - to write the foreword.
Andrew, a 24-year information officer from Newtown, first thought about writing the book when he learned of Saints' intention to leave the famous old stadium.
"I thought it was very important to mark Saints life there and get down in print all those memories.
"The highlight was getting my boyhood hero Mal to write the foreword - I have always looked up to him since first seeing him as a child. He was delighted to write for the book and remembers his year here so fondly," Andrew said.
It took Andrew just over a year to carry out the research and track down and interview the book's contributors.
But the book has had to be revised three times - but there are no complaints from Andrew as it has been to update the honours board.
The book published by London League Publications goes on sale in September costs £9.95 and will be stocked at Saints, Wardleworth's and WH Smiths.
