RESIDENTS in the Whiston area are being urged to beware of unauthorised contractors offering vehicle crossings at a reduced rate.
Knowsley Council officers are warning that it is illegal for any contractor to work on a public footway/highway without first gaining the permission of the local authority.
Recent experience of these 'bogus' workmen suggests that their work is often sub-standard and left in a dangerous condition. Residents should also note that it is the home owner/tenant who is legally responsible for the cost of any remedial work which may be required to ensure the integrity of the highway.
Anyone wanting further information about the construction of footway crossings can contact Tony McClennan at Knowsley's highways maintenance department on 0151 443 2355.
