A NEW exhibition about the history of the East Lancashire area is on view in Towneley Hall, Burnley.

It is named 200 years of Dr Whitaker's "History of Whalley and the Honour of Clitheroe" after the first book on the history of the district by TD Whitaker published in Blackburn in 1807 and usually known by its shorter title. The original parish of Whalley covered Burnley and Blackburn. The book ran into three further editions in the 19th century and several Burnley historians including Angelo Waddington supplied information for the later editions.

Whitaker lived at the Holme, Cliviger, and used the library at Towneley Hall. The library was removed early in the 20th century and the exhibition from September 2 is in the art gallery that replaced it.

Visitors can see historians' desks from 1800,1900 and 2000 and the exhibition comes up to date with films about Burnley's history in the 20th century. It continues to September 2.
