WORK has started on a £21million investment to improve the quality of water produced by United Utilities' largest water treatment works.

Work at Watchgate, four miles north of Kendal, which provides water for Accrington and Burnley, is expected to be finished by the spring of 2003 and is the latest phase of a continuing programme of major improvements at the site.

It is part of a region-wide £3billion programme of environmental and water quality improvements -- equivalent to more than £1,000 for every home in the North West.

Last year United Utilities completed a £9million refurbishment of Watchgate's 56 filters and electronic control equipment.

This new process will further improve water quality by raising treatment standards.

Project manager Graham Whibley said: "Water quality standards in this country are already high and our investment will ensure that we keep pace with the latest changes to the regulations and the improved technology for treating water."
