AFTER 11 years organising Accrington town hall's tea-dances Dora Sant is handing over the running of the event so that she can take to the floor herself.

The event, for Hyndburn Age Concern, was started in 1993 by Dora, 81, after several of her friends complained that there was no where in Hyndburn that ran tea-dances.

An average of 70 people now attend the dances every Wednesday afternoon and even those who can not dance because of disability enjoy themselves by watching others and listening to the music.

Dora said: "Everyone has a really enjoyable time.

"Even if people come on their own there is always somebody to dance with and it is a really good social event. It is also a good way of keeping fit and active."

Although she has now handed over the organisational reigns of the tea-dance Dora will continue to attend them and will keep her other roles within Age Concern including reception work every morning.

Patrick Collister, chief officer for Age Concern Hyndburn, said: "Dora is a real ambassador for Age Concern - if she can help in any way, shape or form she will do. We would be lost without her."

The dances are held at Accrington Town Hall every Wednesday between 1.30pm and 4pm and cost £1.30 each week.
