POLICE have called on people to spill the beans on motorists who have had too much alcohol as part of a summer crackdown on drink drivers.

Officers have teamed up with Lancashire County Council for the annual safety drive, which started this week.

Inspector Chris Gradwell, from Lancashire police called on the public to call a special drink-link phone line anonymously. A similar call last year led to a number of arrests.

The drive is part of a national road safety campaign called Together We Can Make a Difference and police forces across the country have been encouraging the public to take more care when they drive.

Mr Gradwell said the Christmas holidays and the summer period are traditionally a peak time for drink driving and warned motorists that those breaking the law would not be tolerated.

Mr Gradwell said: "In summer the good weather can be a temptation to drink and drive.

"A drive to a country pub, beer garden or barbecue seems a good idea until you loose track of just how often your glass is filled and then you drink more than you planned.

"So we are trying to encourage people to think about how they will get home should they choose to drink."

He added: "Lancashire County Council have also been involved in educating the public about the dangers of drinking and driving and we hope very much our joint efforts this summer will stamp it out ."

"Any alcohol, even a small amount can affect a driver's judgement and drinking and driving can have a lasting consequence."

Anybody who has would like to call the drink-link phone line can call the Crimestoppers number anonymously on 0800 555111. All calls are free.
