Last Friday, on the eve of the new season Bury FC chairman Terry Robinson sent an open letter to the people of the town

THE season commences tomorrow, but there are still many questions our supporters need to be answered.

The on-going takeover, which has been the subject of much media speculation, has still not been completed. The club and its board of directors have, in very difficult circumstances, kept the ship afloat.

The invaluable help from the Bury Times and supporters through the "Save Our Shakers" and many other initiatives, such as the United game, have helped us through a difficult summer.

The worst fear of the European Union actions over Bosman and the threat to the transfer market, has led to two experienced players leaving, without any compensation to the club. This in the past has been the life blood of Bury Football Club as well as that of other teams.

The coming season will require massive support from the supporters and the town. Unfortunately, financial loans from our council do not seem possible and while not understanding how other clubs benefit from the assistance of their council, we have to respect the decision.

The takeover of the majority shareholding appears close. The legal ramifications of various High Court rulings, and agreements with various solicitors in the context of the overall agreement between Mr Eaves and the other parties, appear to be the reasons for the present hold-up.

We, the directors, are cajoling and encouraging all the parties to come to a speedy conclusion for the well-being of the club.

The present situation is not satisfactory but neither the prospective purchasers, or the present board of directors, can do much more than they are doing. We feel that the sale of the shares is imminent but we are not able to give conclusive information.

What can we do? We need your support. Without financial backing we have to be self-financing. We ask all townspeople who have any feeling for the club to support it until the takeover. Give a "grand old club" the chance it deserves.

We still need donations and financial assistance but more than anything, we need you to come to the matches. Let us see you all at Gigg Lane for the QPR game. Let us show all the doubters that we have a vibrant club with a super ground and a young, promising team with potential. Now is your chance to show them that we also have a "crowd".

T.J. ROBINSON,

chairman/chief executive
