Clarets boss Stan Ternent believes that the opening day win at Wednesday proved what a healthy state his squad is in.
While it took time for Burnley to take control of the contest, a well placed header from Gareth Taylor on 57 minutes and a penalty from Paul Cook 19 minutes later secured victory and Ternent was effusive about what his side had achieved.
The Clarets went to Hillsborough without the services of defenders Mitchell Thomas and Graham Branch, both injured, suspended midfielder Kevin Ball and newcomer Dimitri Papadopoulos, the striker who was away on international duty with the Greek under-19 side.
"I feel that the strength of the performance shows that we have got a good squad together," enthused Ternent.
"It is what we have been trying to build and we are going in the right direction.
"We were missing four players who you would feel would be in the team, but what was even better was to look at the substitutes bench and see a group who are also more than capable of claiming a first team place.
"It's good, it's healthy."
Ternent was involved in an incident following Cook's decisive penalty as he attempted to prevent a Sheffield Wednesday fan who had run on to the pitch confronting his celebrating players.
Ternent was guided away by youth team coach Ronnie Jepson and was quick to apologise after his actions.
"If I have offended anyone I am sorry but I was just trying to defend my player," said Ternent.
Temperatures soared after Stoke referee Phil Dowd ordered the spot kick retaken for encroachment in the penalty area having already warned the Owls players before the kick was taken, but Ternent felt that the home fans had little to complain about.
"With the penalty what the referee said to the players is not really my concern," said Ternent.
"The keeper made a good save from the first kick, but if there has been encroachment then the kick has to be retaken."
The opening day success had it's negative side to go with the huge number of plusses, with four Clarets players -- Lee Briscoe, Dean West, Alan Moore and Paul Weller -- cautioned for fouls and Weller and Taylor picked up knocks into the bargain.
However, Ternent remained philosophical about the down side.
"We suffered one or two knocks, but nothing serious," he said.
"Paul was feeling a little tired and was feeling his hamstring a touch and we took Gareth off because he had taken a knock on the ankle
"Bookings are part and parcel of the game and you know that they are going to occur regularly through the season.
"That is why you need the kind of strength in the squad that we are working hard to put together."
