NIK MICHOPOULOS - Looking very confident as the season starts, took crosses with ease and had few problems with the shots...7 DEAN WEST - Aggressive and able to stifle Owls left side threat, unlucky with his booking...6 STEVE DAVIS - Cool and unruffled when Wednedsay were in ascendancy, a good skipper's display...7 IAN COX - Alongside Davis was almost a mirror image of his captain's unfussy approach...7 GORDON ARMSTRONG - Strong on defence and effective in attack with a series of crosses, including a beauty for Taylor's goal...7 GLEN LITTLE - struggled to find space in the first half, but after the interval found himself some room and ran the Owls ragged...8 PAUL COOK - Cool as he banged away the second goal from a twice taken penalty, but had to work hard in a tight midfield contest...7 PAUL WELLER - The lack of room in the midfield battle meant his performance had to be effective rather than flambouyant...7 LEE BRISCOE - Up against his old club he got involved in some skirmishing but kept his head and won his battle over his old mates...7 IAN MOORE - Superb movement and ingenious touches always suggested he could open the Owls defence when the chance came...9 GARETH TAYLOR - Chances came and went but he was always dangerous and scored a superb opener...8 Subs: ALAN MOORE (for Weller 66 mins) - Combative but little chance to shine...6

GARETH TAYLOR

"The gaffer stressed to us at half-time the need to take our chances.

"I had a couple in the first half and not taken them so I was really pleased when the goal went in.

"I was once a Sheffield United player, but to be honest the Wednesday game is just another fixture now and I am loving playing with Burnley and really pleased to come away with the win."

PETER SHREEVES

"Overall we have to be very disappointed with the result.

"When I look at my side and ask who has stayed in the battle for 90 minutes then only maybe five or six out of all that I used have done that really.

"But Burnley played a good game and deserved their victory.

"They are a hard team to play and Stan (Ternent) has schooled them very well and they seem set fair to have another good season."

STAN TERNENT

"The first goal was very nice when it came.

"There was a good bit of build up about it and the ball was well delivered and it was a chance superbly taken by Gareth Taylor.

"But there was a lot about the performance to be pleased about.

"We were disciplined, and we defended particularly well and dealt very comfortably with their set pieces and the threat of the long throw-ins."

Skill slot Ian Moore's back-heel gave Gordon Armstrong the time and space to supply a pin-point cross for Gareth Taylor to open the scoring.
