SHAKERS striker Jon Newby had the distinction of netting the first league goal of the new season after just three minutes in a brilliantly worked one touch passing movement, writes Paul Forrest.

And Bury were good value for their victory, enduring some pressure in a game full of incident with both sides hitting the woodwork twice.

Rovers squandered a number of chances to equalise but lost their way when troublesome striker Seyne N'Diaye was sent off on the stroke of half time for elbowing Michael Nelson.

The second period saw Bury almost totally dominate, producing some vintage carnival football and they should have wrapped the issue up well before Andy Parkinson equalised in a breakaway counter-attack.

However a deserved second and winning goal was put away by new captain Paul Reid following good work on the right flank.

For Bury there were impressive attacking displays from young full backs Matt Barrass and Chris Armstrong but it was 21 year old new boy centre half Michael Nelson, signed from non league Bishop Auckland, who was outstanding and Bury's man of the match.

RESULT: Tranmere 1... Bury 2
