PENSIONERS in Pendle are being urged to take advantage of a scheme to promote energy efficiency by putting in an order for free energy-saving light bulbs.

The bulbs will be delivered and fitted free but the bulbs will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Bulbs and a more limited number of 200 energy-saving kettles are available as part of the 'Lightsavers' project, promoted by Pendle Council, Pendle Home Care & Repair, Age Concern (Nelson) and Lancashire Energy Efficiency Advice Centre, with Norweb Energi.

The scheme aims to help elderly people save money as they reduce energy consumption and see the benefits of low-energy lighting.

A 20-watt low energy bulb is equivalent to a 100-watt 'normal' bulb. It uses about one fifth of the electricity of a standard light bulb and lasts up to 10 times longer and could save up to £10 per year on electricity bills.

Stephen Whittaker, the council's Energy Efficiency Officer, says: "Each year the Government instructs utility companies to 'give back' to customers a certain amount of money in tangible ways to improve energy efficiency.

"Norweb Energi are meeting this requirement by offering these free light bulbs and free kettles to those over 60 and living in the borough. The only drawback is that this is a limited offer so people will have to contact us quickly to avoid disappointment."
