WORK has finally begun on a long awaited new supermarket in Carnforth.
Building work on the Safeway store on Lancaster Lane is under way more than a year after planning permission was given and the site cleared.
Carnforth Mayor, Cllr Ken Bond, said: "Safeway have restarted work and we understand that their proposed completion date is Easter 2002 and we look forward to them meeting that date after such a long wait following the granting of their planning permission."
Safeway spokesman, Peter Fitch, said the store would be opened early next year. Mr Fitch said: "The work has not been delayed.
"The company had always planned to start work in this financial year, and we have started it in this financial year."
