I WRITE regarding Councillor Kevin Scarlett's conviction for drink-driving.
As a representative of the community, Coun Scarlett is in a high profile position and to have acted in this manner was quite disgraceful. I feel that he has let down the people that he represents and must resign.
In your article you quoted council leader John Byrne as saying that "nothing serious happened". I find such opinion to be offensive and quite indefensible, coming as it did from a senior councillor.
I am of the opinion that Bury is now governed by men of double standards and hypocrisy would appear to be the order of the day. I have been a Labour supporter for more years than I care to remember but I will never vote Labour again. I am truly appalled at the conduct of these elected members.
To put the record straight, drink-driving is one of the more serious road traffic offences, that is why it carries a mandatory disqualification of one year for the first offence and a three-year ban for a second offence committed with ten years.
Have some moral fibre, gentlemen, and resign immediately.
