IT was reported that, following his conviction for drink-driving, Councillor Kevin Scarlett had taken the decision to remain in office.
Council leader John Byrne is reported as supporting this decision, one of Coun Byrne's comments being that no one was injured and nothing serious happened!
I write to remind Coun Byrne that at the time of his offence Kevin Scarlett was a potential killer, and that if he were to see the misery that results, then he might not have commenced his drunken ride.
Local road safety campaigner Thomas Killoran saw his best friend killed by a drunken driver. Kevin Scarlett says he has had time to reflect on his misdemeanour; unlike him, Thomas Killoran's friend did not have an opportunity to reflect when he paid the ultimate price with his life.
Drink-driving is an appalling crime. The statistics are spine-chilling and I recommend that councillors Scarlett and Byrne take a long look at them.
How anyone in a position of caring for welfare and good government in Bury can set out to condone drink-driving is beyond belief.
I believe the residents of the Radcliffe Central ward deserve a better councillor.
