A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital yesterday afternoon after a road accident involving three vehicles.
Police said the crash happened at 2.15pm on the A59 near Gisburn when the woman, driving a Rover convertible, attempted to overtake two vehicles.
They said one was a wagon carrying animals and the other a furniture van turning right into Rose County Foods.
The Rover collided with an oncoming Proton car travelling towards Clitheroe.
The collision caused the Rover to smash into the side of the furniture van.
The Proton skidded down an embankment and finished on its roof in a field.
An eye witness said: "The whole incident was terrifying and by the state of the cars I am surprised that no-one was actually killed."
The woman was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital after being freed from her car by the fire service. She had a suspected fractured leg.
The two other drivers were taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary for medical checks but are believed to have escaped serious injury.
The accident caused severe disruption to traffic flow on the A59 between Gisburn and Clitheroe and there were long tail- backs for three and a half hours
