THE Worthington Cup this season will see the first and second round ties settled on the night.
After two-legged opening rounds for many years the Football League have made a change that has proved popular with the competing clubs.
And Burnley boss Stan Ternent is no exception.
"I think that it is a step in the right direction," said the Clarets supremo.
"Certainly with the number of games we have to play it is a big help.
"We have enough games and, with the League finishing in April for the World Cup, I feel it is both a good and sensible idea.
"And I think that it will capture the fans imagination a bit more as they will get a result on the night.
"Of course extra time and penalties are a possibility but it is just up to us to go out there and win the game."
The League had been accused of making the move under pressure from the bigger clubs in the competition, but they have refuted those claims.
"It has been suggested that this move was at the behest of the big clubs, but that was categorically not the case," said League spokesman John Nagle.
"All clubs were consulted and there was support from clubs of all divisions.
"We are convinced that this move will add to the entertainment of the early rounds and that it will prove popular with the supporters."
