TWO 12-year-old cats found a safe haven at a busy animal sanctuary after their owners wanted to put them to sleep so they could continue holidaying.
Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, in Turn Village above Edenfield, has been forced to stay closed through the foot and mouth crisis.
And it faced increased pressure with the closure of the Bury branch of the Cat Protection League.
Chairman of Bleakholt Muriel Bird said: "We are homing dogs and cats by appointment and grateful to all the home-vetters and dog walkers who live locally.
"We are also assisting others with rescue cases and our cat and kitten building is always full. Our most recent entrants were two 12-year-old cats whose owners wanted them put down so they could continue holidaying.
"Their vet couldn't stomach that excuse and contacted us for help, which we gave.
"The latest arrival in the dog section is a young lurcher called Bella.
"She has just had a litter of pups but a home is waiting for her."
