CHORLEY put Saturday's disappointment firmly behind them to record an excellent win with a very competent performance at windswept Borough Park last night.
Workington had won their opening game 3-0 but were given no scope to build on it by a very determined Magpies team who called all the early shots. Veteran home keeper Keith Mason was repeatedly in action and it was no surprise when Chorley finally gained reward on 32 minutes.
Mason saved with outstretched leg from Neil Mitchell, the ball looping for a corner via the crossbar but from the kick Mitchell was not to be denied, ghosting in to bury a well-timed header. The Magpies, with central defender Lee Molyneux making an eye-catching debut, defended solidly but were grateful to keeper Simon Marsh for a stunning point-blank save from Wayne Johnson just before the break.
Chorley survived strong pressure from Workington at the start of the second half before going two up on 52 minutes with a gem of a goal from Danny Mills who rifled the ball into the top corner from all of 35 yards.
Apart from one hectic melee in which three successive shots were somehow beaten out by Marsh, Chorley confidently protected their lead and iced their cake in the closing seconds. Following a free kick, Mason could only knock up a fierce shot from the tricky David Eatock and Andy Mason was on hand to nod the ball into the vacant net.
REWSULT: WORKINGTON 0 CHORLEY 3
