FOLLOWING the vandalism of the Grandmother and Child statue on Blackburn's Boulevard, I would like to make a point of the wisdom of Councillor Ashley Whalley's comments.

Firstly, he said: "Somebody must know who has done this," (LET, August 15). Excellent deduction skills -- perhaps the actual vandal may be able to assist.

Secondly, Coun Whalley (LET, August 16), deduced that the vandals may have sold the stolen child's arm for a couple of quid to a scrapyard.

Not that scrapyards would turn down such a common item of scrap metal, although I would presume that they would have preferred the leg or the grandmother's arm at least.

It was astute of Coun Whalley to point out the value of stolen metal statues. No doubt the statue will slowly start making its way into the local scrapyards limb by limb until all that is left is a pair of women's shoes and a lonely teddy-bear.
