POLICE investigating the death of an East Lancashire pensioner who died after an accident with a car on Blackpool promenade were today hunting a vital witness.
May Holden, 77, of Hall Park, Haslingden, died on Monday in Preston Royal Infirmary after suffering serious head and leg injuries.
Mrs Holden and her husband, Fred, 76, were both involved in the collision with a Vauxhall Cavalier as they walked on Blackpool's central promenade on Sunday August 13.
Mr Holden also sustained serious leg and head injuries but has now been released from Blackpool's Royal Victoria Hospital.
Police investigating the accident have spoken to the driver of the Vauxhall and numerous witnesses but added they would still like to speak to a taxi driver who is believed to have been parked in traffic near the scene at the time.
A police spokesman said: "We are aware that there was a taxi driver who was stationary at the time of the incident and would appeal to him to come forward.
"We have spoken to witnesses who have said there were a number of people in the area who we have yet to trace."
The couple had been enjoying a holiday on the Fylde, where they spent frequent breaks.
They originally retired to Stalmine, near Fleetwood, but returned to Haslingden to be near their family and moved into their rural retreat near Haslingden in 1988.
Mr Holden is a retired engineer and his wife was born in Accrington and lived in Maudsley Street as a youngster. She later worked as a cotton winder in mills in the Haslingden area.
Mrs Holden leaves one son, Roy, who lives in Blackburn Road, Haslingden.
Anyone with information about the accident should call PC South on 01253 293933.
