PRESTON finally got their first win of the new season at the third attempt -- but only after an extra time goal from Michael Jackson.
North End went into the match with much the same team as finished Saturday's draw with Walsall, the only major surprise was Adam Eaton coming in for the injured Rob Edwards at left-back.
Preston started the match brightly and for the first ten minutes looked quite comfortable, then on eleven minutes Sean Gregan dallied in midfield and was dispossessed by Mark Blake who fed Broughton to score but the effort was ruled out by the linesman's flag.
Five minutes later a misunderstanding between Eaton and Murdock allowed Tiny Bird to run through and power the ball home from the right side of the box, 1-0.
Kidderminster piled on the pressure and Bird hit the outside post with a header from a free kick.
All Preston could muster in reply was a weak Gregan shot.
The Preston midfield looked out of sorts and Gregan went into the referee's book on 36 minutes for a foul on Blake and a minute later it was 2-0. A Stamps free-kick wasn't cleared and Foster returned the ball from the left where Broughton flicked the ball to Bird on the right and from a tight angle shot into the roof of the net from eight yards.
At half-time Moyes brought on Gallacher and Keane for Cartwright and Rankine.
Preston piled on the pressure with both Healy, Gregan and Anderson going close and Keane outstanding in midfield before Macken finally got on the scoresheet on 77 minutes running through from a Murdock header to rifle home from the left hand side of the box.
Preston finally got back on terms when 'keeper Brock could only parry a Healy shot and Gallacher's looping header was judged to have crossed the line from the rebound as Brock fumbled despite the protests of the home team on 87 minutes.
Into extra-time and there was only really going to be one winner and so it proved when Michael Jackson powered in a header from Alexander's corner in the 99th minute.
So Preston go into the draw for the next round but it was very close to being an exit.
Man of the Match: Michael Keane
RESULT: Worthington Cup 1st round: Kidderminster 2 Preston 3
