ON Thursday evening the National Team Open with a target weight of 13lb took place on the Island Lodge with twenty seven anlgers participating.
The target weight failed to be achieved, Daz Shaw fishing peg three, took top weight 9-15-12. In second place, Bill Brierley 8-2-12, closely followed in third for fourth place between Roy Gough and Tom Brownhill 6-15-8.
On Sunday, the Bury Societies Annual Charity match in aid of Bury Hospice took place on the Island Lodge fished by nineteen anglers.
The match produced some excellent weights Chris Hogan fishing (peg 28) took top weight 24-5-4 which included four quality bream. In second place Roy Gough fishing (peg 24) 17-13-8, and in third place Alan Crook fishing (peg 6) 16-4-8, Section winners: Graham Smith (peg 7) 14-6-0 and Bill Brierley (peg 29) 12-15-4.
The event raised £100 for Bury Hospice and the club wishes to thank Aldersons Groundbait for their valued support. In the last hour of the match heavy rain and heavy thunder and lightning passed over for the weigh in.
The previous Wednesday the Junior section fished the Horn Trophy on the Island Lodge, the full results not being to hand in last weeks notes.
First: Ian Gough 8-3-0, second: Ben Greenwood 2-13-0, third: Liam Walmsley 2-11-0, fourth: Tom Worrell 2-9-0, fifth: Daniel Hill 1-8-0, sixth: Rick Stillwell 0-2-0.
On Wednesday I had the pleasure of fishing the Embassy Veterans National Championship, fished on the Leeds Liverpool Canal between Wigan and Burscough.
This was extremley friendly event fished by two hundred competitors in excellent weather conditions.
I drew peg 128 at Gorst Lane on the Stick Ups, however the big bream failed to show and small roach, perch and gudgeon being the main species caught.
Essex angler Derek Powell taking top weight 202 for 19-3-8. In second place Norfolk angler Gordon Pearce on the next peg 201 with six quality bream 16-9-0 and in their place Alan Webber (Wigan) peg 195 with bream, roach and perch 12-3-0.
The Fifth Division National Championship took place on the River Trent between Winthorpe and Dunham Bridge on Saturday.
Thirty five teams participated and each competitor had the choice of two pegs adjacent, Only seven of the 420 anglers failed to weigh in. Top Teams: 1, Team Perninsula Marazion 331 pts; 2, Collingham AA 311; 3, Gas Club AA 303.
Top Individuals: 1, Paul Harrop (Turners Tackle Bait) 11.260kg; 2, Bob Ellis (Bulls Head AC) 10.900kg; 3, Terry Morgan (Team Mask Tackle) 8.400kg.
The fifth qualifying round of the Embassy Pairs took place on the River here On Sunday with 149 pairs competing. Three pairs qualified for the final 1, Alistair Ogilivie (Dick Clegg Mark One) and Mick Stamp (Harequins) 496 pts; 2, Chris Peberdy (Angling Man Leicester) and Rick Alexander (Angling Man Leicester) 493 pts; 3, Richard Wilson (Browning Leegen) and Alex Mitchell (Browning Leegen) 492 pts.
BURY SOCIETY SENIOR SECTION
The national Team have a meeting on Wednesday, August 29 at Bury Bridge Workingmen's Club at 8pm.
The clubs next match for the September Cup takes place on the River Irwell on Sunday September 2, at the Farmers Arms., draw 9am.
The clubs committee meeting takes place on Monday, September 3rd at Elton Liberal Club at 7.30pm.
