THE importance of multi-culturalism and the need for all Bury's communities to live in harmony were the twin themes highlighted at a special event this week.
Bury's Jinnah Day Care Centre hosted a celebration to mark the 47th anniversary of Pakistan's independence.
Around 200 guests and dignitaries, drawn from the Asian and host communities, attended the celebration on Monday night (Aug 20).
The guests of honour were Mr Ayaz Wazir, Consular General of Pakistan and Chief Supt Phil Hollowood, commander of the Bury police division.
In his address to the guests, Mr Wazir spoke about the importance of maintaining and expanding a multi-cultural society and for people to abide by the law.
During the event, children sang a selection of songs and there were speeches by a host of dignitaries, including Chief Supt Hollowood. Guests later enjoyed a celebratory meal.
Centre manager, Mr Jawaid Iqbal said: "We invited a cross-section of the community to attend the event.
"We are trying to bring all sections of our community together and this was a wonderful occasion."
