YOU'VE heard of a pub with no beer. Now it's a post office with no money!

That was the bizarre situation at Holyrood Post Office in Bury Old Road, Prestwich, this week.

And it meant a number of senior citizens who called to collect their pensions being turned away.

One pensioner, who did not want to be identified, said: "When we called in to the post office on Monday morning (Aug 20), we were told they didn't have any money and they couldn't supply our needs.

"They also said they'd have to wait for people to come in and buy things before they could get any money."

A spokeswoman for Post Office Counters later issued an apology to customers who were affected by the cash shortage.

"The post office did run out of money," she confirmed. "A delivery didn't arrive as expected and at that stage there had been another due in the afternoon.

"Customers were asked to come back in the afternoon if they wanted to but alternatively, to save a wasted journey, to call in the following morning."

She added: "Some particular people with their pension books were asked to try alternative, nearby post offices.

"We can only apologise for what happened. To run out of money is very unusual, but it was just a temporary situation."
