A DISABLED man who "glassed" another man in a pub, knocking him unconscious, has been given a 12-month-jail term -- to run after a three-and-a-half-year term he is currently serving.
Burnley Crown Court heard how Anthony Connolly, 34, had threatened to ram the glass down victim David Woods' throat after accusing him of writing letters about his ex-girlfriend.
Mr Wood was taken to hospital, where he was found to have suffered two lacerations to his head, and swelling to his cheek and lip. He was kept in for observation and was allowed home two days later.
Sentencing the defendant, Judge Raymond Bennett said he had struck the complainant a very forceful blow. Connolly, of Blackburn Road, Accrington, admitted unlawful wounding.
Judith McCullough, prosecuting, said Mr Wood was in the Arcade Bar in Accrington, and when he decided to leave, the defendant blocked his exit. Connolly began to accuse the complainant of writing letters about his ex-partner but Mr Wood did not know what he was talking about. Connolly picked up a glass, told Mr Wood not to write any more letters or he would ram it down his throat and hit him on the left side of his face with it.
Miss McCullough said the defendant later went to another pub and told his sister there had been a bit of a scuffle. Police were contacted, Connolly was arrested and said he had drunk about nine pints of cider. Julie Taylor, defending, said Connolly received the three-and-a-half-year sentence on June 15.
He had had a lot to drink, which was not mitigation, but might explain why he behaved in this way.
Connolly's former partner worked for the Social Services and after the department received letters the defendant believed were written by Mr Wood, his ex-girlfriend was suspended from work.
