A NEW building was on the cards for Wigan and Leigh College, if the Xanadu project had been given the go-ahead.
But this week, marketing chief at the college, Brian Dean, although disappointed at the news, said other development considerations could now be studied for the college site.
The multi-leisure complex was planned for the Marshall Street site, and would have meant a campus move to a site near to the college's Image Centre, alongside Atherleigh Way.
Mr Dean said: "The fact that this development has been rejected is obviously a major disappointment to the college, but we are glad an outcome has finally been reached.
"We now have the opportunity to pursue other inquiries we have received, regarding the development of our Marshall Street site that will enable us to both maintain and enhance the College's sixth form provision."
lCollege chiefs stress the Marshall Street site is still very much operational, and that sixth-form provision will continue to be offered there for the foreseeable future.
Enrolment for this academic year is continuing for the following fortnight and full details of courses being offered at the site can be obtained by phoning 01942 761600.
