I AM 80 now but will remember those pre-war days spending happy hours of model yacht-sailing and, in summer, swimming and sunbathing in Clarence Lido, a very popular venue attracting people from miles around. A permanent lifeguard was always present, changing rooms were provided and there were usually several ice cream vendors around.
As I recall, Councillor Roberts was the driving force behind what should have been a successful and very welcome up-dating and refurbishment of what was Bury's sole development of its type.
Many thousand of pounds was obviously spent on the project. However, as far as I can recall, the water replacement supply was, for some reason, cut and thus the main reason for its updating was frustrated.
Even so the Lido remained a very pleasant spot, though now even this aspect has been lost. It's a pity it wasn't in that area much beloved of our council, "East Bury".
