LEIGH Centurions' Academy team are just one game away from claiming the Division One Minor Premiership.
If they beat Doncaster at Hilton Park tomorrow afternoon, the young Centurions will finish top of their division and be firm favourites to reach the Grand Final.
The young Centurions, who have lost only two games all season, are just one step away from clinching the Minor Premiership after a thrilling 12-8 victory at Featherstone last weekend.
On a poor pitch and facing a hostile home crowd, Leigh kept their nerve and did remarkably well to go in for the break just 4-0 down. Despite having the majority of play in the first half, Featherstone found Leigh's defence tough to crack where Pete Fairhurst and Chris Pitman were outstanding.
Leigh had a couple of chances themselves. Hooker James Wanklyn was held up on the line and a Rovers hand prevented Anthony Blackwood going in.
Pitman had a try disallowed early in the second half for a knock-on but they hit the lead five minutes later when scrum-half Ryan Baker, a key figures in Leigh's win, put an inviting grubber kick over the line for Chris Humphries to touch down and Chris Mellor to convert.
Rovers replied through winger Gareth Dyas and they were still leading with just four minutes left. Leigh's inspiration again came from the diminutive Baker who crashed over for the clincher following a close range move, Mellor adding a second conversion.
Academy coach Darren Abram is staying with Leigh. Rumours linking him with a possible move to Widnes have been discounted. He has a further 12 months to run on his contract and says he will honour that deal.
