IN response to your recent article on Calderstones Hospital, Whalley (LET, August 15), I have cause to visit every week, West Drive, which is the high security wing of the establishment and my personal experience of the security in place there is that it is second to none.
Clients who are classed as being dangerous are accompanied at all times by two male members of staff, who have to be, at all times, within arm's length. I have frequently seen staff give up their break times to ensure that visitors to the wing are safe.
They are seriously understaffed, but I do feel that your paper should give them credit for doing a very difficult job in very difficult circumstances.
They treat the clients with respect and compassion while still ensuring that the discipline and rehabilitation of the clients are met as far as possible.
