A PROJECT in Pendle which promotes the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and tackling the problem of social exclusion has proved to be a big hit since it was launched in April.
The Healthy Communities project is run by the Pendle Leisure Trust and funded by Pendle Partnership, Sure Start and the Primary Care Group (NHS).
It focuses on improving the health of local people by providing exercise sessions, a GP exercise referral scheme and classes, including quitting smoking, dietary advice, first aid and drug awareness.
Project co-ordinator Carol Harvey said: "Some people find it difficult to access a leisure centre for a variety of reasons, including lack of confidence, transport or for cultural reasons.
"To overcome this barrier we take the project out in to the heart of the community by holding classes in places like halls, churches and youth clubs."
Her Asian ladies exercise class, held twice a week at the Silverman Hall in Nelson, has more than sixty people in each class.
The project has received support from organisations such as Sure Start, Walking the Way to Health and the Stroke Association.
