TROUBLESOME teenagers could soon be a thing of the past for residents living near to a Clitheroe park.

County council bosses are set to rubberstamp a £5,000 project to build a youth shelter within Henthorn Park, off Henthorn Road.

The project has been put forward by the council's Ribble Valley youth and community team, who believe the scheme will result in a more harmonious relationship between residents and local youngsters.

A report will be presented to the cross-cutting executive committee, which currently approves decisions taken by the cabinet member for cross-cutting, Coun Ruth Henig, on Thursday.

The cross-cutting portfolio covers projects which require input from more than one area of the council, such as crime and disorder strategies.

Lancashire County Council is one of several organisations involved in the scheme.

Ribble Valley Borough Council and Clitheroe Police have worked alongside the county council to find a solution to juvenile nuisance issues.

The report to the crossing-cutting executive committee, by John Kirkham, a youth and community service officer, states that, historically, Henthorn Park has been used by local youngsters as a meeting place. They currently congregate on benches near to houses, causing disturbance to residents.

The report states: "Both young people and residents have been consulted on the principle and siting of a youth shelter."

The overall cost of the scheme is £6,463. Local councillor Alan Yearing, said: "There have been consultation exercises when residents had the chance to express their fears.

"Indeed, points were put by the residents. The youth and community shelter is part of a crime and disorder strategy for the area.

"They were reasonably happy with the scheme."

The report to the committee asks for approval for the £5,000 contribution, stating that it will provide a safe, lit environment for youngsters and give officers the chance to build better relations with them.
