THE Mayor and council leader will be swapping the comforts of Pendle council chamber for lung-bursting travails of the Great North Run next month with the aim of raising money for charity.

Councillors Colin Waite and Azhar Ali will take part in the 13-mile race in Newcastle on Sunday, September 16, and all the money they collect will go to the Mayoress' charity, which is for the baby care unit at Burnley General Hospital.

The sporting twosome are hoping local people will help by sponsoring their efforts.

Coun Ali said: "The most I have ever run is six miles but I am training hard and intend to complete the full distance."

Coun Waite said: "I ran the race last year and thought this would be an excellent opportunity to try to raise some money for the Baby Care Unit which provides a valuable service for people in Burnley and Pendle."

Sponsorship forms can be obtained from Pat Hudson, the Mayor's Secretary, on 01282 661633, or in person from the reception at Nelson Town Hall.
