ON a very wet and humid afternoon, the Bury and District Table Tennis League had another first to add to their long history, when they held a Golf Tourament at Whitefield Golf Club.
The format of a shot gun shot was well received, and 13 teams with four players on each team, played with the best two scores to count on a combined Stableford format.
The wet conditions did not dampen the enthusiast players, and although very wet by the end of 18 holes, all agreed that the event had been a great success and should be repeated next year.
Co nsidering the weather in which the event was played, a high standard was achieved, and the results could not have been closer. Two teams tied with equal points and the team of Daniel Sheldon, Mike Sheldon, Paul Abrahams and Daniel Bereus won on a better back nine holes. The team who just lost out was Frank Sheldon (father of Daniel and tribe), Dan Cochrane; Andrew Farrell and Peter Bands. In third place, only a single point behind the other two teams, was a team captained by former Bury Table Tennis Champion, Howard Leigh, who had Brian Webb, Roy Schofield and John Walsh as his team mates.
Other teams who participated; Tim Ternant; Wayne Kenny; Graeme Sinclairl and Ted Buckley; Peter Bladen, David Birch; Duncan Crabtree and Mike Milner; Peter Jones; Ross Manning; Alan Hunt and Neil Flanagan; Stephen McAndrew; Bob Varty; Mike Wildridge and Lol Hullett; Tim Boomfield; Brendan Mulholland; Joe Brennan and Sam Courtney; George Lomax; Dave Hunter; Alan Hilton and Andy Lomax; Veronica Jones; Judith Potter, Lynne Townsend and Val Willis; Graham Wardle; John Huggins; Jan Huggins and Roger Sallin; John Flowers; Paul Booth; Dave Leonard and Patsy McDade; Martin Glick; Franklin Sheldon; David Glick.
The third hole was chosen as the Nearest to the Pin competition; and was won by Joe Brennan.
After the event a buffet dinner was followed by the presentation of prizes, and a new competition completed which hopefully would run for many years.
Prizes for the event had been donated by Martin Glick and Polyflor. Attending the dinner was ex Manchester City stalwart Tommy Booth, who was checking into how his brother Paul Booth had gone on in the event.
