DROP IN THE OCEAN: Umbrellas were out for the first time for more than a month at the weekend as rain was at last falling on Bury. Despite the occasional heavy shower in the North West, however, Greater Manchester Weather Centre recorded rainfall of a mere one-eight for the area. That was nowhere near enough to relieve the desperate water shortage.
SAINTS AND SINGERS: The 36-strong All Saints, Elton, church choir cut their first record when they recorded an evensong and several carols on the Grosvenor label.
BYE BYE BANKS: The deputy head of St Gabriel's RC Secondary School for the last 20 years, Mrs Alice Banks, retired.
