BLACKPOOL was pinpointed as the perfect place to launch a new set of stamps featuring puppet icons Punch and Judy and their pals and celebrating over 330 years of slapstick and satire.
The town was chosen because it is "a classic seaside location well known for such shows. The resort has also been selected for the special pictorial first day cover postmark prized by collectors.
The colourful series of six first class stamps will go on sale on September 4 and to mark the occasion Royal Mail invited puppeteer Geoff Ree (pictured left) to stage a special Punch and Judy show alongside North Pier last week. Preview blow-up of the stamps were also on show.
Lorraine Whitehouse from Royal Mail said: "We feel sure this novel issue will delight children and adults alike.
"Today's youngsters may have been weaned on TV, DVD and computer games, but we expect them to enjoy the stamps just as much as their parents and grandparents."
The special unstamped Royal Mail First Day Cover envelopes will be available from main Post Offices along with presentation packs and commemorative postcards.
