A TEENAGER who spoiled his good character by carrying out a bottle attack in a nightclub has been put behind bars for 15 months.

Jimmy Dunn struck out in the C'est La Vie nightspot, in Market Street Lane, Blackburn, while he was holding a bottle. The result was a two to three centimetre cut below someone's left eye.

Dunn, 18, of Adelaide Terrace, Blackburn, appeared for sentence at Preston Crown Court, having pleaded guilty to an offence of unlawful wounding. The incident occurred in March last year.

June Morris, prosecuting, said the victim, Christopher Ireland, had gone to the nightclub with friends.

He and a friend began standing next to the dance floor when the defendant pushed him in the chest for no reason.

The defendant then approached a second time and struck a blow to the face while holding a bottle in his hand.

"There was no warning and no provocation," said Miss Morris.

By chance the police were close by the club and the matter was reported to them. Dunn was then identified by Mr Ireland and arrested.

The defendant told police when interviewed next day that a lad had pushed him, so he pushed him back.

Mr Philip Andrews, defending, said Dunn came from a respectable and caring background. The offence was very much out of character and on the spur of the moment.

He was very upset at the time because his mother had had a heart attack. At the time of the offence he had drunk a vast amount of alcohol.

Mr Andrews said: "With some perceived or imagined problem, very much on the spur of the moment he committed the offence. Although he accepts in full his responsibility his recollection of it is rather cloudy, to say the least."

Dunn felt regret and remorse over what happened.
